A peacock medallion between two butterflies: three Lippan panels made to hang as a set, the butterflies facing inward on 10 by 18 inch boards and the peacock pair on an 18-inch square with a round mirror at its centre. Red and orange mirror mosaic throughout, so the whole group reads as one piece from across a room.
What Lippan art is
Lippan kaam is the mud-and-mirror relief work of Kutch in Gujarat, made for centuries by Rabari women on the inside walls of their homes: clay worked into raised patterns with the fingers, then set with abhla - small mirrors - so a single oil lamp lights the whole room. What you are buying is that technique on a board, hand-worked in India.
What is in the set
- Peacock medallion - 18 x 18 inches, 1,800 g (approx. 4 lb). Two peacocks around a round mirror centre, red mosaic border
- Two butterfly panels - 10 inches wide x 18 inches high, 990 g each (approx. 2.2 lb). One left-facing, one right-facing, mirror mosaic in the wings
The butterflies are a handed pair - one turns left and one turns right - which is why they belong either side of the peacock rather than side by side.
Why this one
Around 3.8 kg - about 8.3 lb - of clay relief and glass across three boards. This is the only set in the range with no deity and no figure in it, which makes it the one people buy for a living room or an entryway where devotional imagery would not fit. The mirror work is heaviest in the butterfly wings and the peacock tail, so it catches light from an angle rather than head-on.

Where it goes
Above a console in an entryway, over a sofa, along a stair wall, or in a hallway where three pieces in a row have room to breathe. It suits a plain wall - the mosaic is busy enough that wallpaper fights it.
Hanging it
Each panel has its own hook. The peacock at 1,800 g wants a nail into a stud or a rated anchor; the butterflies at 990 g each are lighter. Hang the peacock first and space the butterflies off it. Screws and anchors are not supplied.

Care
Dust with a dry, soft cloth or a soft brush - the raised relief holds dust in the grooves. Do not use water or spray cleaner on the clay work. If you want the mirrors bright, wipe them individually with a barely damp corner of the cloth.
