In an Indian home the flower garland does the decorating. It hangs across a doorway, drops down either side of a mandir, frames a backdrop or loops along a stair rail. Fresh marigold and mogra last a day; these are fabric, woolen and beadwork versions that come out of storage every festival for years. Twenty-six here, $14 to $110, in lengths from 2FT to 10FT.
Which one do you need
Start with length, not flower. 2FT strings are for a mandir, a photo frame or either side of a doorway. 5FT is the general-purpose length for door frames and backdrops. 7FT and 10FT are for a mandap, a stage or a full wall. Most listings here offer two or more lengths on the same page, so pick the flower first and the length second.
Marigold — $22 to $110. The Artificial Marigold set of ten 4FT strings at $22 is the cheapest way to cover a lot of doorway. Marigold Ball uses tight round blooms and comes in 5FT, 2FT or a chandelier form. Marigold with Pearl Danglers adds a hanging pearl drop to each flower. Marigold and Jasmine runs to 10FT, the longest string in the range.
Mogra and jasmine — $45 to $60. Four sets, all in 5FT or 2FT. Mogra with Gold Bells adds a bell at each interval so the string sounds when a door moves. Mogra with Marigold Buds and Mogra Marigold Leaf mix white jasmine with orange, the leaf version adding green foliage so it reads closest to fresh. Jasmine Lotus Bud is the plain white one.
Woolen and pompom — $48 to $65. Not floral at all. Woolen Bead and Gota Cone, Woolen Bead and Pearl Gota, Woolen Pompom with Gold Bells, and Multicolor Pompom Ball. These hold their shape in storage better than fabric petals and suit a brighter, less traditional look.
Pearl and gota — $50 to $60. Peony and Pearl in 3FT is the dressiest set here. Red Fabric and Pearl comes with a metal hook fitted, which is the real differentiator if you are hanging on a door rather than a rail.
Danglers and hangings — $42 to $45. Vertical strings rather than horizontal garlands. Lotus Dangler, Lotus and Diya Dangler, and a set of six Pichwai, elephant and jharokha panels at 2FT.
Torans and chandeliers. Six door bandhanwars in 3FT to 6FT, covered in full in the toran collection linked below, plus a Jasmine Flower Chandelier set of three that hangs down rather than across.
Where these work
A front or pooja room doorway, a mandir, a backdrop or photo wall, a stair rail, a mandap, and around a window frame. Bought most for Diwali, Navratri, Ganesh Chaturthi, Janmashtami, weddings, baby showers and griha pravesh.
